WSC5 Videos
Via the logic-masters forum (Germany), I found that Stefan Heine has posted some videos from the World Sudoku Championship: Round 1 start, Germany at work on the Pentathlon, Finals - middle, Finals - end, Team awards - we eventually get the lights turned up!

The most interesting to me are the two that contain segments from the Finals which give a feel for what that was like with commentary, both with a thirty second clip when Jakub is in the lead and working on the Just One Cell Sudoku, and when Jan is about to finish (and does finish) the last puzzle. Our biggest oversight was not filming this ourselves and I'm not sure we'll ever recover more footage from the Philly Inquirer or other people. But you can make an engaging final for the audience and the competitors.

I enjoyed the clips of commentary that I heard and can only imagine what the overall effect must have been like. Puzzles may not lend themselves to commentary very naturally, particularly when the audience of participants is overtly a global one (even if all puzzle business is conducted in English), but there is so much about that WSC that has been carefully and deliberately thought out that I hope future events consider the reasons which led you to take your decisions. I also hope that every comparable final features commentary from now on.
