First Person of the Year, now an (online-only) piece from TIME calling me an Olympian (of sudoku):
Postcard From Prague
I was on the front-page of time.com with my picture yesterday, with my place taken over by Richard Gere and his scandalous kiss today. Interesting company. Still, a lot of classmates from 'tech caught me on Facebook after seeing the article so its probably the most visible media source the WSC was reported in in the states.
Some other recent press stories since my last posting - more to focus the links for me but here for the curious as well:
Harvard Crimson Magazine piece - The picture (of me working over my battleship sudoku sketch book while composing a message in gmail) has some odd specks on my face, which upon self-examination in the mirror, must have come from specks of dust on the camera lens.
Boston University Free Press piece (registration supposedly required) - which has a nice balance with a coworker's (and good friend's) comments, and a brief note from
onigame about our puzzle community project.
I've gotten front-page coverage from my hometown paper (registration required) and my grandparents' hometown paper as well. Nothing from the Buffalo News, which would count as a hometown paper as well if it were covering anything but the Sabres these days; Go Sabres!
Aside from the articles I'm interviewed for, I've been using Google homepage News updates on "sudoku" and "Thomas Snyder" to give me everything else. Unfortunately, for the first time another Thomas Snyder has become noteworthy on google, namely the newly appointed Ivy Tech president, although his appointment had controversy. While I dodged the "Tom Snyder" Google bullet when I started using my full name again in college, I have some competition with my full name now too.
Edit: I also recently found some video of the championship on an Italian site here.
If it weren't for Nikoli.com sometimes having sudoku, I wouldn't have solved any since Prague. But since I can say I treat all of those like a competition and try to do my best time-wise, I can start these two counters:
Days since I last solved a classic sudoku (non-competition): 23
Days since I last solved any other puzzle: 0 (a slitherlink, from a Nikoli Pencil Puzzle book)
I expect one counter to go up and the other to stay sort of steady.
